Origin and artistic approach

​

    My name is Sylvie Beaupré , I was born in Gaspésie, Quebec in a village founded by Acadians and other valiant settlers. These elders who had escaped deportation by the British army, after having seen their houses and their herds burnt, have bequeathed their culture to us. Drama, singing, religion and crafts were part of life in our village.

   I often paint displaced, resilient people and the nature around them. When traveling, I visit public markets, ports, lively and colorful stations. An exotic side to my color palette bears witness to my travels. The West Indies, Peru and other places visited reappear in my paintings during the winter in Quebec.

   In my mosaics, I recreate spaces of marine life, flora and animals. I use recovered materials such as water-polished glass, broken dishes and other artefacts that I incorporate into ceramics and glass. It's my way of paying homage to the environment and its protection.
